The art of interviewing: balancing natural flow and valuable content

Nirish Shakya has conversations with guests about human-centred design, and wanted to talk to me about how we can make our conversations sound natural, but also engaging. And how do…

As a podcaster, you want to create engaging content that keeps your listeners coming back for more. One of the most important elements of your podcast is the guest interview, but how can you make these conversations sound natural and engaging? Here are some tips to help you sound more natural when interviewing guests.

1. Focus on the topic

First and foremost, make sure that the topic of the conversation resonates with you. If you’re not interested in the topic, it will be difficult to sound engaged and excited. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of what the guest wants to talk about, and do some research beforehand so that you can ask insightful questions.

2. Be friendly

People want to talk to people who are friendly and positive. If you are friendly and warm, your guest will feel more comfortable and will be more likely to open up. Try to create a relaxed atmosphere where your guest feels at ease.

3. Start with a chat

Instead of jumping right into the interview, start with a casual conversation. This will help to break the ice and create a more relaxed atmosphere. It can be helpful to hit the record button as quickly as possible so that you can get the formalities out of the way and start the conversation.

4. Edit to perfection

Editing can be a powerful tool for making your interviews sound more natural. The goal of editing is to make everyone sound their natural best, their sparkling best. When you are editing, focus on chipping away everything that isn’t the shape you want it to be. Don’t worry about hitting a specific time, instead focus on hitting a threshold of attention.

5. Find a balance

It’s important to find a balance between your voice and your guest’s voice. Make sure that you are actively listening and engaging with your guest, but also make sure that you are not interrupting too much. If your guest is talking too much, try to gently steer the conversation back on track.

6. Keep the listener in mind

Remember that your podcast is for your listeners, not for you or your guest. Keep the listener in mind at all times and make sure that you are providing value to them. Try to make the conversation engaging, insightful, and informative.

Conclusion

By following these tips, you can make your podcast interviews sound more natural and engaging. Remember to focus on the topic, be friendly, start with a chat, edit to perfection, find a balance, and keep the listener in mind. With a little practice, you can create interviews that your listeners will love to listen to.
